Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
