EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
